I think I'm only able to start doing this stuff at my age because I've learned to fuel myself properly for my training and listen to my body. I take unplanned rest days, sleep extra when I need it, do extra mobility, vary my intensity and volume, all depending on how my body feels. I do believe in pushing yourself to give your all. I know you can't make progress without commitment. But I also know that overtraining is problematic for both the body and the mind. Who wants to burnout when the going is just getting good? ☀️☀️Reach and push but always think about the bigger picture. The longevity game is the most important one to win if you want to be healthy and strong for a lifetime and not just right now. Take care of your whole self. I bring work home which means I stay up late to do it, which means I don't get enough sleep to properly function the next day, AND it results in me not waking up for my morning workout sessions. Gah. In younger years I trained because I thought I had to burn a certain number of calories. Working out became a form of self punishment and perfectionism. That's no way to live, imo. I've slowly found a place where I only do things I'm passionate about now. Things that challenge and motivate me to build skills. I'm not afraid to admit I have a lot to learn and I find that part of the process almost as interesting as the actual training #iloveminutia 🤓. ☀️☀️ There is no right or wrong in what activity you choose to do for fitness. But is important to use it as a tool to build yourself up rather than shooting yourself down. That's how you'll find a love for it and stick with it. Find the things that inspire you and get moving. Although I frequently goof off between sets (like, read all your posts on IG and FB 🤗), I try to be as efficient as I can, using rest time to practice foot work, muscle engagement and mobility. ☀️☀️ I love this quote because it's a reminder of how amazing it is to have a healthy working body and the capability to push it beyond self-perceived limits. I've been at a point of extreme frailty and lethargy where I thought I might not come back from it. So I look at every day of training as a blessing. As even when I'm critiquing my film and I know I can do better, I remind myself how lucky I am to have the chance to try. #gratitudeattitude ☀️☀️ Embrace your journey. While it is important to push yourself to improve, don't forget to appreciate and praise yourself for what you're doing as well. I've been doing variations of these a few times a week to help build my grip and core strength, pushing myself to go as long as I can without putting the weights down. Trying to arrange some of my training so that some challenging (but not dangerous) things are at the end. New Year New Gear #resurrectedfitnesschallenge 1/3/17 Not exactly. But a 15# Squat PR for 1RM of 180#. (189# body weight.) I wanted this 185# attempt SO bad. I was so excited to see 2 big plates on the bar! SN: weird alternating foot numbness never had before. Started in LT foot during last 5 or so attempts and last lift moved to RT foot. Lasted about 5 minutes after. Hmmmm.

You can have all the perfect gym gear (and I do admit, I love all the shiny new gym things 😊), but it won't really matter if your heart and your mind aren't in the game. I reshaped my training several times over the last two years until I found something that creates a balance: focusing on skill building rather than more subjective outcomes. I really respect anyone who gets on a stage to compete, but I've realized that doesn't work for me mentally. I think that's why I'm drawn to Olympic lifting. Nobody can deny it when you've hit one of those lifts. And it takes all the components of athleticism to get it done. I may never truly be great at it, but it certainly inspires me to want greatness. ☀️☀️ If you want fitness over your lifetime, and not just for right now, then find the thing that truly sparks you. Work on balance. Push yourself but don't kill yourself. And figure out how to enjoy it. It should be hard, but it should still be fun. Don't do things you dread.
