#Repost @monicakim524 with @repostapp ・・・ #currentlyreading : "The Sellout" by Paul Beatty. I wasn’t familiar with Paul Beatty’s work before last year when he became the first American to win the Man Booker Prize. It was then when I immediately went to a bookstore to to pick it up. I had actually started reading back then, but got sidetracked for reason. So I'm glad to re-start again and actually finish it. Happy reading? 🤓✌️📖 . . A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality—the black Chinese restaurant. . Born in the "agrarian ghetto" of Dickens—on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles—the narrator of The Sellout resigns himself to the fate of lower-middle-class Californians: "I'd die in the same bedroom I'd grown up in, looking up at the cracks in the stucco ceiling that've been there since '68 quake." Raised by a single father, a controversial sociologist, he spent his childhood as the subject in racially charged psychological studies. He is led to believe that his father's pioneering work will result in a memoir that will solve his family's financial woes. But when his father is killed in a police shoot-out, he realizes there never was a memoir. All that's left is the bill for a drive-thru funeral. . Fueled by this deceit and the general disrepair of his hometown, the narrator sets out to right another wrong: Dickens has literally been removed from the map to save California from further embarrassment. Enlisting the help of the town's most famous resident—the last surviving Little Rascal, Hominy Jenkins—he initiates the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court. via @picadorusa . . #thesellout#paulbeatty#fiction#picardo#january#januaryreadingchallenge#goodreads#goodreadsreadingchallenge#readingchallenge#currentlyreading#book#books#bookish#read#r
The Nest by Cynthia D’aprix Sweeney follows the Plumb family, after years of tension, 3 siblings decide to confront their older brother Leo, fresh from rehab, and of course drama happens and secrets are revealed. I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I had hoped, it had interesting moments but overall it fell flat for me. I wasn’t a fan of any of the characters and the drama was very basic and predictable. However I did really enjoy the message of the book regardless of how I felt while reading it. 2/5 stars. If you enjoy family centric novels filled with drama, then you may want to check this book out because it might be the book for you! #books#bookstagram#contemporary#adultlit#fiction#thenest#cynthiadaprixsweeney
Good evening everyone! Sorry I haven't posted recently but I've been really busy with school work, my exams are in a few months and I'm definitely not prepared • I finished 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' the other day and I absolutely loved it! It's quite an intense, blunt story at times but I'd definitely recommend it. • QOTD: What is the most interesting country you have visited? 🌿~

Apparently I am on a leg kick this week!🤣 Probably because these tree trunk legs are my least liked body part! 😕 Seriously I am known as #thunderthighs and #mancalves ! 👣 Okay but for real I have always hated 😡my legs. I’m learning to love 💕all parts of me because without love and gratitude their can’t be growth! Yeah I do NOT have a thigh gap (although it’s totally cool if you do 🙌🏻🙌🏻), my quads could crush a can 🤣, and my calves don’t fit anything! 🔥🔥But you know what I happy AF at the progress these legs make, the fact they let me walk and workout everyday! I’m grateful as hell! 😍So everyday I thank my legs for being strong with muscle! 💪🏻 It’s amazing how a simple change can change so much! 💕💕
I really want to collect all of Fitzgerald's works in these beautiful foiled editions 😭 they're so pretty! . . . For my next project at Uni, we've been paired up to produce a 1 minute pre-roll book trailer, so I was wondering if anybody had some trailers in mind that they particularly like that I could include in my research? 🌝🙏🏻
She covered her face with her hands. She cringed at her uselessness that day at Cattail. What was the thing she could have done that would have changed everything? It was like searching for that small lost thing. She thinks she remembered where she saw it last, but it was never where she checked. It's got to the somewhere, she'd think. Then she'd never find it. But everything is somewhere. The answer had to be that simple. There must be something and then it would make sense. - The water began to boil. She steeped her tea, dunking her teabag in and out of the water. She tried to think of nothing, hoped the answer would come through the silence. She drank the tea and peered into the cup. She looked for the dark specks of tea leaves. She moved the cup into the light. (...) She peered into the cup and looked for tea leaves, divining. She looked hard, her eyes ached. "He wanted to tell her she'd have more room if she'd just get rid of her books, but he supposed that in her case, it would be like telling a mother she'd have more room if she threw out her children." ~ My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton & Jodi Meadows ✨• • • I know you're probably thinking "why are all these books together in this photo? They have nothing in common!" What I will tell you now though, is that they do have a lot in common. They all have purple covers underneath the dust jacket! So, yeah that's basically why they are all sitting together like this, because after I took a photo of them with all the dust jackets off, I just took another photo of them with the covers on right before they went back on my shelf. I know this little story is probably completely boring you to tears but I had nothing else to really talk about. Okay, I'm going to shut up now, bye love you guys. 👋🏼 😂• • • •
Woman of Light—Collaboration Call! . I’m building a large Tesla Coil cage for my next work featuring a (quite intense looking) Afro-Future model striking Burmese-Victorian dance poses. . No doubt, there’s dangerous levels of electricity — necessitating a mad scientist, and (of course) a stop-motion fable pantomimed by frog legs. Sadly, ends in death. Surprised? . Fashion Designer Call At present, I’m looking for (somewhat notable) fashion designers who can feature their work — mainly flowing dresses, makeup, and jewelry. Reach out if intrigued by collaboration. . Will (hopefully) be featured on Beautiful Bizarre, so there may be some exposure. No promises there. The larger point—you can plug your wares in an artistic experimental way. And, this one is going to be most fun. . Industrial Electrician Call If you (and/or your company) wants to help/take over the Tesla Coil part of this project, reach out. Especially true if you’re located in the New England or San Antonio-Austin, Texas area. . No need for (actual) electrocution on this project. At minimum, you’ll have bragging rights over your tri-state area competitors! . All those sparks — it’s going to be awesome! . . #motiondesign#fashion#gothic#victorian#burmese#afrofuturism#stopmotion#photography#fiction#illustration#industrial#electricity#teslacoil#teslacoils#modelingagency#electrician
(Cont'd from previous post. Part 2 of 2👇🏾) While in the taxi, I finally devised the perfect text and typed it quickly. "I'm sorry I can't do this, I am already engaged to someone and we are getting married soon. It was all fun and games but seeing you made me realize you deserve better." Fully convinced of its lethal effect I pressed send. . . . . 3 hours later. No reply like I expected. I stretched out on my bed and laughed at how foolish life had to be to me. After months of showing off a guy and telling all the envious girls around that I had found the one it had to turn out to be a "baba" with good iPhone and great editing skills. It was a painful joke. But Just as I was about to sleep off I got a text. . . . . "Wow. Who knew you could be so cruel. You were married and you deceived me for so long. That was my father you met. I was trying to convince my mother to come downstairs to see you just because I thought I had found the woman of my dreams. I curse the day I met you. Have a nice life. Jokes on me huh!" . . . . The puzzle finally began to fit. The older and chubby looking man was his father. The hand shake. The formal treatment. "Oh my God!" I exclaimed and quickly dialed his number, only to listen to "you are not allowed to call this line." He had blocked me. And that was how I lost my blessing due to rash conclusions. . . . What does this teach you? Comment below.
Eventually you will close your eyes at 3:33am, imagining that you're a jackal, yip yipping in the sahara air, never captive to a cage or cruel master, but laughing at the wind that serves as a muse and mother, licking you as if you just took a bath, flecks of mud of your hind leg. Yip yip and eventually you will open your eyes at 3:34am and realize you are an animal, but another kind.
