SO WHEN YOU FIND YOURSELF LOCKED ONTO AN UNPLEASANT TRAIN OF THOUGHT, HEADING FOR THE PLACES IN YOUR PAST WHERE THE SCREAMING IS UNBEARABLE, REMEMBER THERE'S ALWAYS MADNESS. The Killing Joke is undoubtedly one of my favorite comic books. It is one of the darkest in the Batman series, and since it is a child of Alan Moore, (who also happens to do The Watchmen, another favorite of mine) I have always liked it. Moore has actually expressed regret over writing such a dark story. I'm paraphrasing, but he basically stated that what happens in these pages is more weight than any comic book character story should hold. Similar statements have been made in regards to The Watchmen. Personally, I don't mind when comics venture into gritty storylines because it gives us something to parallel in or own reality and opens doors to new discussions. While The Killing Joke certainly isn't a family friendly comic, it's one that I will always have in my collection.
